FOR EDUCATION

Innovative buildings for modern schools
Modern school concepts require innovative architectural approaches. The decisive factor for the construction or conversion of educational buildings is always the pedagogical concept. Therefore, a charrette with the teaching staff where we work out the special requirements of the institution together is usually on the agenda before the actual planning phase: which classes form a cluster? Which differentiated areas are desired, where can the students also work in smaller groups? How should the classrooms and subject rooms be equipped from a technical point of view?

The central question is always: What do the students need? In addition to clear structures, the integration of quiet and active zones is an important criterion. On the one hand, students need quiet zones such as libraries where they can work or relax undisturbed. On the other hand, children must be able to follow their natural urge to move. School yards should offer the space and opportunity to let off steam, climb, or play table tennis.

SO THAT KIDS AND ADULTS FEEL WELCOMED

Of course our designs take into account not only the students, but also the teachers. These must have the opportunity to correct classwork or prepare lessons in a quiet atmosphere. The teachers’ room and secretary’s office should be centrally located and still offer the necessary peace and quiet for focused work. Another focus is on all-day programs, which are available at many schools and must also be spatially integrated into the school concept.

Furthermore, schools and educational institutions generally have to meet special requirements in terms of sound insulation, fire protection and accessibility. Thanks to our wide-ranging experience in the healthcare sector, we are very familiar with appropriate measures, from self-opening doors to stair lifts. Last but not least, the external appearance of educational buildings plays an important role and should always match the surroundings.

CONSIDERABLE EXPERIENCES WITH ALL TYPES OF EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS

Our experience in educational construction is extensive: We have already implemented a wide variety of projects in elementary and secondary schools, in business colleges, as well as in day-care centers and after-school care. When designing a day-care center, we also always keep an eye on individual requirements and the educational concept: Are there fixed group structures, or can the kids move freely around the building and take advantage of offerings? How can sanitary, dining, and rest areas be optimally integrated? Do the children get involved in cooking? How many toddlers are there? On this basis, we develop concepts for day-care centers and after-school care in which young and old alike can feel at home.
